Huron Valley Ambulance (HVA) was created in 1981 as a nonprofit organization by five hospitals in Washtenaw County following the failure of several commercial ambulance services. The hospitals invested $2 million dollars in our ambulance service, purchasing in new vehicles, equipment and facilities. New leadership and staff were hired and advanced life support service was begun in early 1982.
By 1984, the ambulance service was now breaking even and gaining the trust and support from the community. Our owner-hospitals began asking volunteer community leaders to serve on the HVA Board of Trustees and they continued to improve service delivery. Successful in their goal of stabilizing emergency medical services for county residents, the hospitals gave HVA to the community in 1985, as a free-standing nonprofit, charitable organization. Although no longer HVA's owners, our hospitals have continued to play a part in the governance and success of our organization ever since.
HVA began extending its services beyond Washtenaw County borders in 1986, establishing an ambulance station in the City of Belleville in Wayne County. Additional stations were added in Plymouth (1989), South Lyon (1990), Tecumseh (1995), Wixom (2003) and Milford (2006). HVA also began a series of partnerships with other hospitals in 1986 to serve Jackson, Lenawee and Calhoun counties, as well as in Monroe County in 2005. Another HVA partnership - Alliance Mobile Health - began serving southeast Oakland County in 2000.
Today, HVA and its affiliated organizations provide 9-1-1 paramedic ambulance service to about 1,000,000 residents in all or part of eight counties in southeast and south central Michigan.
